The crankcase breather on the EA888 uses a spring-loaded diaphragm to regulate how much vacuum the intake pulls on the crankcase. When the rubber tears, the intake pulls a permanent vacuum through the crankcase and the fuel trims go lean at idle because that air was never metered.
