Timing Chain
A metal chain that keeps the crankshaft and camshaft(s) rotating in sync so intake/exhaust valves open and close at the correct point in the engine cycle.
Unlike a timing belt, a chain is designed to last the engine's life, but its guides and tensioner are plastic/hydraulic wear items — their failure, not the chain itself, is the usual cause of the rattling or "death rattle" noise on cold start.
