Alternator
A belt-driven generator that charges the battery and powers the vehicle's electrical system while the engine is running.
A failing alternator shows up as dimming lights, a battery warning light, or a battery that won't hold a charge even though it tests fine on its own — the giveaway is a charging-system voltage reading outside the normal 13.5–14.5V range with the engine running.
